 VOICE GUBERNATORIAL EVENT CANCELED

Despite the best efforts of a large number of VOICE leaders and key powerful allies, we have been unable to secure the participation of the gubernatorial candidates to our October 3rd assembly in a way that would be of VOICE's interest.

Therefore, we are cancelling the assembly, including the proposed virtual version of the assembly. We will now move to other ways to engage the candidates, both before and after the election.

VOICE GUBERNATORIAL ACTION

OCTOBER 3, 2021

Action: 3:45 PM - 5:15 PM

Dar Alnoor Islamic Community Center

5404 Hoadly Rd, Manassas, VA 20112

One of my pandemic activities has been virtually attending VOICE (Virginians Organized for Interfaith Community Engagement).  Iris and Bonni have also attended VOICE meetings.  VOICE represents over 50 Northern Virginia congregations, tenant groups, and service organizations.  VOICE advocates for issues that are of concern to its members.  In this election year, VOICE identified two issues to present to Virginia’s gubernatorial candidates at a meeting in the afternoon on Sunday, October 3rd.  These issues are:

CRISIS RECEIVING CENTERS VOICE want candidates for Governor to commit to establishing Crisis Receiving Centers in each NoVA county.  A critical missing piece to ending mass incarceration is diverting those with mental illness and addiction to Crisis Receiving Centers, facilities staffed by mental health and addiction experts to which law enforcement can take someone struggling with mental illness and/or addiction instead of to jail or the Emergency Room.

10,000 affordable housing units that include rental and home ownership VOICE will call on the gubernatorial candidates to act with VOICE on an affordable housing strategy to meet the real need that our current eviction crisis has made even clearer. In addition, ensure resources for home ownership production to address the huge wealth gap that exists as a result of our discriminatory housing policies, redlining and more.

Funding has been identified for both of these initiatives.  VOICE hopes to have over 500 people turn out for this event to reflect the level of commitment to these initiatives.

So, what are you doing after platform on Sunday, October 3rd?   Come with me to represent NoVES at this event.  Masks are required and there will be social distancing.

Think it over.   If interested, call me at 919-672-9076 and we can arrange to carpool (parking is extremely limited).
