October Service Challenge

  • Thursday, October 15, 2020

It's  time for our 2nd Service at Home Challenge! Last month we focused on the virtue of Kindness, specifically to ourselves.  This month we are going to focus on Kindness to Others.  Kindness is about being generous with your time and compliments, being compassionate, and genuinely having concern for others.

September 28th marks 200 DAYS since the quarantine began.  Many people have been sheltered at home, getting groceries delivered, avoiding crowds and cancelling vacations.  But others have been working on the front lines to keep essential services available to everyone.  I think it would be a good idea to show some kindness to the folks in our society that truly keep things moving.  Hospital workers, law enforcement, fire departments, EMT's, grocery store clerks, farmers, gas station attendants, restaurant workers and more.

Since October is the Month of TRICK OR TREAT, lets share some TREATS with our essential workers.  Imagine if someone gave you a plate full of treats, for no reason at all, except to be kind.  This project can be as easy as buying some store bought treats and delivering them with a hand made note or thank you card.  Or, if you really want to go above and beyond, you could buy and/or decorate a "Kindness Plate" to fill with your treats.  Then, the recipient can take that same plate and fill it up and pass it onto someone else....and the kindness will keep getting passed around and around!

Plates can come from your home, the dollar store, or a consignment shop. You can even use paper plates!

Here is a quick video tutorial using paint markers on glass

Here is some sample lingo to include with your plate:

The Kindness Plate

This plate belongs to everyone!

Wherever it may go

With each new sharing of its gifts

May love and blessings grow

So fill it up and pass it on

To family and friends,

and start the journey one more time

So the kindness never ends!

The Giving Plate

This plate shall have no owner

For its journey never ends

It travels in a circle of our family and friends

It carries love from home to home

For everyone to share

The food that's placed upon it was made with love and care

So please enjoy what's on the plate

Then fill it up again!

Then pass along the love it holds

To your family and friends
