This is intended as a guide for NoVES committees, teams, and task forces. In most cases it refers to skills and responsibilities of the committee as a whole, not of individuals.
| Skills needed: | Has interpersonal skills. Has basic knowledge of NoVES philosophy, history, programs, and membership. |
| Responsibilities: | Greet visitors beginning 30 minutes before platform. (Have two greeters available if possible.) Help visitors to find out about NoVES. Help newcomers to meet members with similar interests. Send a handwritten note within a week of newcomers first appearance, welcoming them, enclosing an appropriate brochure, and offering to answer questions or provide information. Give newcomer’s names and contact information to the newsletter distribution person, the Leader, and when appropriate Sunday School people. Encourage newcomers to participate in NoVES activities and committees. When the time is right, encourage newcomers to apply for membership. Hold a formal newcomers orientation program at least once per year that includes a welcoming atmosphere and the participation of existing members. Coordinate NoVES participation in local fairs such as Viva Vienna. Write newsletter articles introducing new members. Strive to be involved in programs to improve member retention, working on an ad hoc basis to share this responsibility with other committees (especially the Caring Committee), the Leader and the Board. |
| Member Term: | 2 years. |
| Measurement of Success: | Anecdotal evidence through collected comments of newcomers. Number of new members. Punctuality and reliability of greeters. |
| APPENDIX: | Collected wisdom from past committee members:
Committee involvement in member retention could include playing a role in finding out members interests, helping to staff committees, alerting the Leader, the Pledge Committee, Caring Committee, as appropriate of member issues [varying from medical issues, employment issues, transportation issues, etc.] and trying to develop programs for dealing with these issues. The Committee could also be involved in alerting the Leader and the Board when members become inactive, including contacting them and trying to connect them with activities that might interest them. As stated in the job definition, we have aimed at having two greeters at each platform, starting a half hour before platform. Greeters make sure each newcomer is spoken to and made to feel welcome, gets newcomers to provide address book listing of name and contact information, give name tags to non-members, and where possible provides literature, newsletters, etc. The greeters’ table also displays membership applications. During Coffee period committee members make a particular effort to get to know newcomers, and their interests, and introduce them to members with similar interests. We encourage Board members being active in these tasks as well. Consider writing notes encouraging newcomers to attend special events (Halloween party, winter party, etc.) Also, informally encourage newcomers to attend adult education classes. Consider working with leader and Adult Education Committee to develop a course on what every member should know. |
