This is intended as a guide for NoVES committees, teams, and task forces. In most cases it refers to skills and responsibilities of the committee as a whole, not of individuals.
| Skills needed: | Replies to requests for help promptly. Has good interpersonal skills. Has non-anxious presence during difficult times. Is good about consulting others and working as a team. |
| Responsibilities: | Respond promptly to requests for help from member in need or when professional leader requests Committee involvement, determining if need can be met by Caring Committee or if more substantial, professional or long-term solutions are necessary and need to be sought elsewhere. Communicate regularly with professional leader and Board President about members in need. If person in need has not made a direct appeal for support (when professional leader has made request), discuss how the Caring Committee might respond with the person in need directly. Discuss case of those needing help with the committee chair, other committee members, and/or professional leader. When appropriate, and with permission of person in need, communicate needs of person with appropriate others, which may include entire community. Match person in need with appropriate helpers who either know them or who are compatible. Help coordinate support services with other NoVES members including phone calls, visits, meals or help with shopping, transportation, or babysitting. Follow up with person in need until situation has stabilized and person no longer needs support. |

| Measurement of Success: | Anecdotal success stories. Annual committee discussion of success regarding cases of substantial Caring Committee involvement. |
| APPENDIX: | Collected wisdom from past committee members: Caring Committee can coordinate with Membership Committee to assure that new members are aware of the support the Caring Committee can offer. Caring Committee can keep track of birthdays and send them a card especially when they are going through a rough time. |
