On June 12, 2010, the NoVES Board met at Hank Gassner’s home. All Board members were present – Mary Bellamy, Hank Gassner, Marv Friedlander, Marianne Moerman, Karen Raymond-Hart, Helene Shore, Andy Stanton and Mary Ellen Stanton. Leader Jone Johnson Lewis was also present, as was Sven Sinclair, former Board member and treasurer. Hank chaired the meeting. Prior to the meeting, the Board approved, by email, the minutes of the May 22, 2010, Board Meeting. The items on the To Do list were also discussed by email.
In her Leader’s report, Jone indicated she may be absent during parts of July depending on her new grandchild’s birth. Jone was pleased that attendees at the Interfaith Gay Pride Service warmly received her presentation.
The Board decided to have our summer retreat on August 7. Among the subjects we will discuss are how the Board will address the focus group reports and the make-up of committees. We will also discuss the focus group reports at an ad hoc get together in July for available Board members.
In his president’s report, Hank discussed the Ziskind memorial committee meeting. Karen is handling registrations. Mary is handling finances and outreach to secular groups. The next meeting will be on June 23 at Rosemary Ziskind’s home.
In her vice president’s report, Mary Ellen reported that the leadership met with Jone. Among other issues, they discussed the dilemma of Jone being responsible for 20 hours per week while requests for pastoral care frequently far exceed her hours. The leadership committee also discussed preparing for Jone's sabbatical.
In his treasurer’s report, Sven noted that a few members have not completed their current year pledges and a few others have not completed next year’s pledge form. Board members will contact members who have not completed the form.
The Board elected Mary Ellen president, Hank vice-president, Mary treasurer and Andy secretary. The Board also appointed Marv and Andy as assistant treasurers, with Marv as the bookkeeper. The Board will continue its policy that the person opening the bank statements is different from the one who reconciles the bank statements or writes checks. Sven agreed to train Mary, Marv and Andy on using the bookkeeping software. The Board voted to appoint Sven assistant treasurer for a brief period until the new team is ready to take over. The Board approved a resolution authorizing Mary Ellen and Mary Bellamy to sign checks, while Sven's authorization to sign checks would continue as long as he remains an assistant treasurer.
Jone led this month's learning component by summarizing an Alban Institute resource on the stages of congregation conflict. The basic idea is that all organizations have conflict; however, identifying the stage of the conflict is crucial to effective resolution.
The Board agreed to a statement of appreciation to Chris Centner and Irene Napora for their service to NoVES. Mary Ellen will write a letter of appreciation to let hem know about our thanks for their contributions. The Board discussed the advantages of Meetup in attracting new members. Mary continues to update this site. She asked that we utilize it to welcome visitors.
The Board agreed to sign up NoVES to be an Amazon affiliate, so that NoVES will receive funds for items ordered from Amazon through NoVES.
