Board in Brief – Board Meeting of January 9, 2010

The January 9, 2010, NoVES Board meeting was held at the home of Mary Ellen and Andy Stanton.  Board members present at the meeting were President Hank Gassner, Vice President Mary Ellen Stanton, Treasurer Sven Sinclair, Secretary Andy Stanton, Mary Bellamy, Marianne Moerman, Karen Raymond Hart, and Carole Rubin.  Leader Jone Johnson Lewis also attended.

Prior to the meeting the Board approved, by email, the minutes of the December 19, 2009, Board meeting.  The To Do list derived from the December 19, 2009, Board meeting was reviewed by email before the January 9, 2010, meeting.  Among the items addressed were that Platform Chair Training will take place in February.  Committee definitions will soon be put on the member's section of the website.  Carole continued researching information provided by the Alban Institute to help us prepare a survey.

Various proposals were discussed regarding the composition of the personnel committee.  The Board agreed that the committee would consist of four members, including not more than one Board member.  Two members would be proposed by the Board, and one each proposed by the Leader and the Director of Religious Education.

The Board spent a considerable amount of time discussing the NoVES survey.  The Board agreed to several issues that needed to be covered in the survey.  The Board also agreed that the survey would be conducted by group meetings, rather than by a written survey form.  Each group will be led by a team of facilitators consisting of a NoVES member and a non-NoVES member.  The facilitators will receive training by the Alban institute.  Training will be by phone or online to reduce expenses.

In Jone’s Leader’s report she noted that she’s been converting her Platforms to audio.  She suggested that we can get volunteers to video the platforms.  Andy agreed to do it.  Jone is redoing the script for Platform chairs.  She’s thinking of having several different scripts.  Regarding adult ed, Jone will send out a list of classes she’d like to offer and get input from members.  She’s working on birthday meetings.  Jone proposed an all-Society colloquy at Memorial Day Platform, which would involve breaking up in small groups.  The Board agreed to schedule it.  Jone noted that the Alban Institute had indicated that lack of summer continuity is a big minus for growth.  The Board discussed what could be done to address this.

The Board discussed issues to be addressed at the February Board retreat.
